John Okafor, also known as Mr Ibu, was born on October 17th, 1961, in Umunekwu Village, Eziokwe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. He is a renowned Nollywood actor, scriptwriter, and comedian. Mr. Ibu is widely recognized as one of Nigeria’s most gifted comic personalities, famous for his comedic acting style characterized by idiocy, baloney, and a distinct detachment from reality.

His breakthrough came in 2004 when he starred in the blockbuster movie “Mr. Ibu,” which earned him the popular moniker ‘Mr. Ibu’. In this movie, he shared the screen with Osita Iheme (Pawpaw). As a result of his outstanding performance, he received the prestigious ‘Best Comic Actor in Nigeria’ award at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Mr Ibu Biography: Early Life And Educational Background

Mr. Ibu, hailing from Umunekwu Village in Eziokwe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, is a native of the region. He comes from a family of eight and received his primary education at a local school in the village. For his secondary education, he attended various schools in Delta State before pursuing Mass Communication at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) in Enugu.

During the tumultuous period of the Civil War (1967-1971), Mr. Ibu endured great hardships, losing his father and five other relatives. His primary source of inspiration was his grandfather, whom he humorously describes as a rather “foolish” individual, and it is from him that he believes he inherited his eccentric traits.

Growing up in poverty, Mr. Ibu faced numerous challenges during his childhood. Prior to his acting career, he worked as a firewood seller, a hairdresser, and a meat butcher.

Ibu made his debut in the Nigerian film industry back in 1978 when he starred in a commercial for a soap opera. Since then, the talented actor has been a part of numerous movies, some of which include collaborations with Aki and Pawpaw, whom he admires for their creativity. His breakthrough came in 2004 with the movie “Mr. Ibu,” which earned him his famous nickname. Over the years, he has appeared in more than 200 films such as “Mr. Ibu in London” (2004), “Police Recruit” (2003), “9 Wives” (2005), “Ibu in Prison” (2006), and “Keziah” (2007).

In a 2009 interview, Mr. Ibu shared how he helped Jim Iyke enter the industry after the latter expressed his interest. Many other actors and actresses have also been inspired by the comedian to pursue a career in acting.

Known for his comedic roles filled with foolishness, absurdity, and a complete detachment from reality, Ibu made headlines in 2012 when he stripped naked in public to attract attention and raise funds, which sparked controversy. He secured endorsement deals with Merrybet and Gotv in 2014.

In a 2009 interview, Mr Ibu stated that he was not married, although he mentioned having children. Reports emerged in the media that Mr. Ibu’s son was abducted by his former spouse, who only released him after the requested ransom was handed over. Tragically, the abducted child, Emmanuel Okafor, passed away due to food poisoning, which he reportedly attributed to his ex-wife. In 2014, he was honored with the Best Movie Actor of the Year award by the Peace Ambassadors Of Nigeria. The following year, in 2015, he was presented with the ‘Best Comedian’ award by the governor of Enugu State. He has been recognized with awards for Best Comedy Drama, the African Magic Viewer Choice Award, and various other international accolades.

Mr Ibu’s Cause Of Death 

In October of 2023, John Okafor disclosed that he was battling an illness that posed a threat of amputating one of his legs. He mentioned that the issue arose while he was on a film set with fellow Nollywood actors and actresses. Okafor reached out to his supporters and the general public for prayers and financial aid to cover his medical expenses. He posted a video of himself in a hospital bed, expressing his concerns about the possibility of losing his leg.

The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Foundation, founded by the former Nigerian Senate President, fully covered Okafor’s medical costs by October 18, 2023. The foundation emphasized that Okafor still required substantial financial support for his hospital stay and upcoming travel abroad for further medical treatment.

In November 2023, Okafor underwent a leg amputation following a series of surgeries due to a severe illness. His family explained that the amputation was necessary to save his life and improve his chances of recovery. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated, leading to his passing on March 2, 2024.
