Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani, born on April 19, 1957, is a prominent Indian tycoon. He serves as the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, which is considered India’s most valuable company based on market value. 

As of February 2024, Forbes estimates his net worth to be $112.1 billion, making him the wealthiest individual in Asia and the 11th richest globally. While some view him as a plutocrat, Ambani has garnered a mix of admiration and criticism due to allegations of market manipulation, political corruption, cronyism, and exploitation.

Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani, born on 19 April 1957 in Aden (present-day Yemen), was raised in a Gujarati Hindu family. His parents, Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani, had two daughters named Nina Bhadrashyam Kothari and Dipti Dattaraj Salgaonkar, as well as a younger son named Anil Ambani. After a short stay in Yemen, Ambani’s family returned to India in 1958, where his father started a trading business focusing on spices and textiles. Initially known as “Vimal,” the business was later renamed “Only Vimal.” 

During the 1970s, the family resided in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai. Although their financial situation improved after moving to India, Ambani continued to live in a communal society, relied on public transportation, and did not receive any allowance. In later years, Dhirubhai purchased a 14-floor apartment block called ‘Sea Wind’ in Colaba, where both Ambani and his brother resided with their respective families on different floors until recently.

Ambani completed his secondary education at Hill Grange High School in Mumbai, where he attended alongside his brother and close associate, Anand Jain. In his quest for further knowledge, Ambani decided to pursue an MBA at Stanford University. However, in 1980, he made the decision to withdraw from the program in order to assist his father in building Reliance, a rapidly growing enterprise. At 24, he took charge of building the Patalganga petrochemical plant as the company heavily invested in oil refinery and petrochemicals.

Ambani oversaw the development of the world’s largest grassroots petroleum refinery in Jamnagar, India. Completed in 2010, the refinery could produce 660,000 barrels per day (33 million tonnes per year) and was integrated with petrochemicals, power generation, port, and related infrastructure.

On June 18, 2014, he announced a massive investment of Rs 1.8 trillion across various sectors over the next three years, along with the launch of 4G broadband services in 2015.

In February 2014, Mukesh Ambani faced allegations of irregularities in natural gas pricing from the KG basin, leading to a First Information Report (FIR) being filed against him. He was later elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2016 for his contributions to engineering and business leadership in oil refineries, petrochemical products, and related industries.

As of 2015, Ambani was ranked fifth among India’s leading philanthropists by China’s Hurun Research Institute. He became a Director of Bank of America and notably the first non-American to join its board. By 2016, he was the 36th richest person globally and consistently held the title of India’s wealthiest individual on Forbes magazine’s list for a decade.

He also stood out as the only Indian entrepreneur on Forbes’ roster of the world’s most influential figures. As of October 2020, Forbes ranked Mukesh Ambani as the sixth-wealthiest individual worldwide. In July 2018, he surpassed Jack Ma to become Asia’s richest person with a net worth of $44.3 billion. He also holds the distinction of being the wealthiest individual outside of North America and Europe.

By February 2018, Bloomberg’s “Robin Hood Index” estimated that Ambani’s personal wealth could sustain the Indian federal government’s operations for 20 days.

Ambani’s business ventures extend to sports ownership as he owns the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians and founded the Indian Super League, a football league in India. Forbes recognized him as one of the wealthiest sports owners globally in 2012. He resides in Antilia, one of the world’s most opulent private residences valued at $4.6 billion.
