Janae Nierah Wherry, professionally known as Sexyy Red, is an American rapper and singer born on April 15, 1998. She gained initial recognition in 2018 with her rendition of Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles’ ‘ in her song “Ah Thousand Jugs”. Wherry later appeared in the music video for Summer Walker’s “Sense Dat God Gave You” in 2022. 

Her breakthrough came with the release of “Pound Town” in 2023, a collaboration with Tay Keith, followed by the remix “Pound Town 2” featuring Nicki Minaj, which marked her debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her subsequent single, “SkeeYee,” achieved similar success and both tracks were featured on her second mixtape, Hood Hottest Princess (2023).

In the same year, Wherry was featured on the official remixes of DaBaby’s “Shake Sumn,” NLE Choppa’s “Slut Me Out,” and Young Nudy’s “Peaches & Eggplants,” all of which made it to the Billboard Hot 100. In a 2023 interview with “Complex,” she explained the origin of her stage name, stating that she had always been known as Red due to her preference for red hair and clothing. When it came time to choose a name for her music career, her cameraman suggested adding “Sexyy” to Red, as a nod to her attractiveness and her existing nickname. She embraced the suggestion, finding that it suited her persona perfectly.

Her response was deeply personal as she revealed, “I have unfortunately experienced sexual assault, which remains the most shocking thing that has happened to me.” The hosts then requested an alternative answer, and she humorously replied with “shoot out.”

However, the hosts’ reaction to Sexyy Red’s revelation drew criticism from numerous listeners who expressed their disappointment on social media platforms.

During an interview on Theo Von’s podcast “This Past Weekend” in October 2023, Sexyy Red expressed her admiration for Donald Trump, emphasizing the importance of the stimulus checks he provided. She stated, “We truly need him back because those stimulus checks were crucial. 

Trump, we miss you.” she mentioned her fondness for Trump’s humor and his straightforwardness in addressing people, even if it meant making comments about their weight. She believed that such boldness and humor were necessary qualities in leaders. 

However, shortly after the podcast, explicit scenes from a sex tape featuring Sexyy Red were unexpectedly shared on her Instagram Stories. This led to allegations that she deliberately posted the content to divert attention from the controversy surrounding her pro-Trump statements.

In response, she took to Twitter to express her distress, denying any involvement in posting the explicit material and stating, “I’m deeply saddened. Anyone who knows me understands that I would never engage in such foolish behavior.”
